Project Name: Indonesia Aluminum Plant Ground Improvement Project

Construction Method:

Preloading Consolidation with Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD)

Construction Period: 6 Months

Project Overview

Located in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Indonesia Aluminum Plant Ground Improvement Project covers a total construction area of 786,750.12 m², consisting of the construction of a power plant, aluminum smelter, wharf and stockyard.

1. Scope of Works

1.1 Site Leveling Works

Works include site drainage dredging, clearance of tree roots, weeds and sundries, site grading, woven geotextile laying and medium-coarse sand bedding placement.

1.2 Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) Installation

Set out control points for precise layout; position PVD rigs accurately on site; install long PVDs at depths ranging from 7 m to 22.9 m and short PVDs between 5 m and 12 m.

1.3 Preloading Embankment Construction

Carry out layered filling to build preloading surcharge up to the designed elevation.

2. Geological Conditions

The project site lies within fluvial swamp terrain and marine alluvial plain along river reaches. Though the original terrain is generally flat, it is crisscrossed by natural gullies and man-made drainage ditches with complicated local topography. Subsurface conditions feature uneven soft soil strata with variable thickness, low shear strength and poor permeability, which poses high risks of differential settlement and foundation instability and stands as the key technical challenge of the project. Preloading consolidation with PVD is adopted to accelerate pore water drainage, soil consolidation and densification of soft ground in accordance with site field conditions.

3. Construction Machinery

Multiple sets of PVD installation rigs and associated construction equipment are deployed on site.
